NBA’s Weirdest Storylines: Crazy Tales From the League

The weirdest NBA storylines of 2018-2019 are all right here!

Huh, That’s Weird: NBA’s Weirdest Storylines

Remember when JR Smith tossed a bowl of soup on a Cavs assistant coach? Or when they discovered that KD had multiple burner accounts on social media? Those stories were crazy which led me to wonder? What crazy stories happened this year? Here are my top 4 weirdest NBA storylines from the 2018-2019 NBA season.

Magic Quits

The Lakers were just enjoying their yearly implosion when out of the blue Magic Johnson broke the news to reporters that he was stepping down from his position as president of basketball operations.

The weirdest thing about this was that he basically left out of the blue. No press conference or anything. This video is literally taken 90 minutes before the Lakers played the Trailblazers.

The Purple and Gold had so many crazy things happen in 2018-2019 that this might not seem like a big deal, but it definitely makes our list of NBA’s weirdest storylines.

Markelle Fultz Went Crazy

Markelle Fultz didn’t play more than 40 games in his first two seasons in the league. That’s rough considering he was drafted #1 overall in 2017.

He came back, left, came back, and left again. The shoulder injury was never truly fixed and at this point, it remains to be seen if Fultz will ever be an NBA starter.

He did start a few games for the Sixers at the beginning of the season. Until they made a deal and acquired Jimmy Butler.

Fultz promptly tweeted out “You can’t trust NO ONE!”

Fultz also fired his offseason coach, well-known specialist Drew Hanlen after a tweet saying that Markelle wasn’t entirely healthy.

To make matters worse, the Sixers traded him to the Magic in February. As much as you want to see Fultz succeed, the cryptic tweets, lack of accountability, and inability to recover from injury definitely land Fultz on our list of NBA’s weirdest storylines from 2018.

Jimmy Butler’s Practice Squad

If you know anything about the NBA and Jimmy Butler, you know he’s a pretty good player. Contract talks with Minnesota had stalemated, and Butler wasn’t interested in playing with Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins for another season.

Supposedly, he walked into the first practice of training camp, screaming expletives at the general manager, and the younger Timberwolves. He then proceeded to beat the first team with a bunch of bench players.

That evening after the practice, Butler had a sitdown televised interview with Rachel Nichols and told her his side of the story. Many analysts agree that all of this was done to provide leverage.

Finally, they traded him to Philly, where JB was a last-second Kawhi shot away from making it to the NBA Finals.

There are many moments in the NBA I wish I could have seen with my own eyes. This ranks up with any moment of them all. Watching an infuriated Butler destroy everyone on the first team would have been a hilarious sight to see. This is one of the best moments on our “NBA’s weirdest storylines” list.

Draymond vs. KD

Now when this duo first paired up in 2017 I hated every minute of it. The only good thing that came out of this pairing was the famous GIF.

Not gonna lie, I love that GIF. You can use it in a variety of different situations.

Anyways.

KD and Draymond were basically quarreling all season long.

It escalated in a game against the Clippers…or at least this is the first time the national media noticed it.

You can see in the clip above that KD comes down the court and absolutely bricks a three with about 35 seconds left. The Clippers come down and don’t get anything, and then Draymond gets the rebound and doesn’t give the ball to Durant who is standing right next to him with his arms spread out asking for it.

Draymond then decides to dribble up the court, fumbles the ball, falls over it, and the buzzer sounds. The two teams head to overtime and in the Warriors timeout, Draymond starts walking away with Boogie following. It seems as though there was something we missed. KD is then seen talking to Iggy, and everyone is wondering what we missed.

Chris Haynes reported after the game that Draymond didn’t like what KD said to him, and responded with “Who the **** do you think you’re talking to.”

The next night KD said he hadn’t even talked to Draymond. Likely story bro.

This wasn’t the only instance either.

Reportedly, Draymond went at KD multiple times behind closed doors about his free-agency.

You can also find video after video of Durant and Dray arguing at different various times.

We even have KD’s brother weighing in lololololol

At this point, we can look back on the Warriors and understand that while they were great, they weren’t always cohesive. The KD vs. Draymond fight coupled with injuries and the rise of Kawhi lead to the ultimate demise of Golden State in the playoffs. It’s just another one of the NBA’s weirdest storylines of 2018-2019.
